3 Tips To Keep a Consistent Journaling Practice

Journaling was a hobby I grew up doing consistently beginning in middle school. I kept up with my journal through college – heart breaks and all the drama that goes along with that so you can imagine that it’s super funny to read back – but once I got out of college and became more addicted to my iPhone, journaling fell to the wayside. Between sharing moments on social media and constantly typing to everyone via text, journaling became the last thing on my mind.

The sporadic times I remembered to journal and do the damn thing, the practice always left me with a feeling of conviction, promising myself to do it more. Amidst an environment of hyper connection, it is so nice to take a few minutes to write and connect with yourself.

Like I mentioned, it has been hard to keep a consistent journaling practice as life gets more LIFE-like despite my promises to myself WOOPS. I’ve implemented these tips to help me stay on track with this fun hobby. Try ’em out and let me know if it helps!

  1. Buy a Journal that Makes You Want to Write – Spoken like a true shopaholic but IT’s TRUE and super helpful to have a journal that makes you want to open it and write. Take it a step further and find a journal you want to take a picture of (aka show off) and watch the writing pour out of your soul.
  2. Pick a Time of Day to Write or Carry it in Your Purse – I say either or for this tip because there are two types of journalers: Type A and Type B. Type A peeps, set a certain time aside each day for your journaling practice. Type B peeps, carry your journal around with you for when inspiration strikes.
  3. Play a song on repeat – This is my favorite tip. I love to pick a song (currently Runaway by Kanye West has been my jam for journaling) and play it on repeat while I journal. It’s as if the song stimulates the part of my brain that gets distracted during journaling and I stay more focused on the task at hand. I am sure there is some scientific explanation for this – but I don’t know what it is.

    I’m with you-love journaling and having documentation of day to day life but just need to do it more often! I love the idea of picking a song to journal to.
