Meditation for Beginners from a Meditation Junkie

I have been addicted to meditating for a couple of years now.  I find myself talking about my meditation practice when I meet you guys in person and recently I have started to take notice that this subject is always accompanied by the “what, really? Please teach me!” reaction. I am really vocal about my meditation experiences within my circle of friends and I want to begin to share this on cathclaire in hopes you guys will gain something from it!

Meditation has benefited me in ways that I could have never imagined. It is something I look forward to almost everyday and when the day rolls around that puts the “almost” in almost everyday,  I am ALWAYS happy I pushed through and forced myself to meditate anyway. As a result of this consistent practice: my energy levels are higher, my focus is stronger than it’s ever been, and the voice in my head has become one of my most supportive friends versus a thing to be dealt with.

Instead of leading this blogpost with my current meditation practice that I’ve developed over the past couple of years, I am going to start with a concept that changed my perspective on meditation completely and inspired me to begin to take the time in my daily life to cultivate a consistent practice.  After all, there is magic in beginnings.

The meditation concept is as simple as this: thoughts are allowed during meditation.

Yes, that’s right, you aren’t doing meditation wrong by thinking during meditation. It is completely normal. The goal of meditation is to not sit in the silence without a single thought – it is to develop a healthier relationship with your thoughts and to realize that you are the observer of the thought, not the thought. 

How do you begin to do this? 

To create a healthier relationship with your thoughts and become the observer through meditation, you must include your thoughts in your practice. Let your thoughts scroll across the screen of your mind and don’t judge them or analyze them. Relax and minimize your reaction to your thoughts while realizing you have the power to change them. Is that concept as big of a relief to you as it was to me a couple of years ago?
